Q: What is the most important thing to look for in a gymnastics program?

Everest Gymnastics: There are many considerations, but the top ones that come to mind are the hygiene of the facility, equipment availability, and quality of the coaches. A good gymnastics center will be well-ventilated and obviously clean. It will have a vast range of age-appropriate equipment available with plenty of pieces that will grow with the aspiring gymnast. While not all members of the staff will need to be elite athletes themselves, head coaches should have at least some gymnastics experience, preferably at the college level or above.

Q: Is industry certification important?

You’ll want to make sure that your chosen gymnastics facility is a registered member of a larger gymnastics club, such as USA Gymnastics or the Amateur Athletic Union. Having this relationship means the gym will have to comply with insurance and safety standards and will have completed a thorough background check on every adult that comes into contact with your child.

Q: Once my child is enrolled, how can I monitor their progress?

Everest Gymnastics: This is an important question, and is something you can confirm before your child begins taking classes. Ask your coaches about their feedback policy. They should respond with an openness that will assure you that they will remain continually in contact with you regarding your child’s performance. You may also wish to watch a few of your child’s classes from the parent viewing area to see how often the coach interacts with each student, and how they provide constructive criticism and positive corrections when improvement is needed.
